Home Based Business: What Tasks Should You Outsource?

Owning your own internet business can be exciting, but it can also require a lot of your time. The internet is full of ads that tout “get rich quick” businesses, but you’ll find that the huge majority of those businesses are not the quick success that their ads indicate. Most successful internet businesses require a great deal of your time, often more time than you would’ve spent in the office working for someone else. But the payoff for you can be fantastic, both emotionally and financially.

If you’re thinking of starting a business where you work from home, you have a lot to consider about the startup of that business, what type of business you want to pursue, where your office will be, what equipment you’ll need, etc.

A key consideration for you in planning your new business is how you will accomplish all that you are facing. You are probably going to be your business’ greatest asset. But there are only 24 hours in your day, as there are in mine and everyone else’s. So it will be important for you to carefully consider what it will take to get your business started, and then to keep it running.

Suppose, for example, that your business starts out as affiliate marketing, which is a fairly easy way to begin if you don’t have a specific product to sell. Right away you are facing a wide variety of challenges.

Website Construction
You’ll need a website from which to run your business. You must decide whether to design and construct it yourself, outsource the construction of your site to a site design company, or affiliate yourself with an affiliate marketing business that offers to provide you with a starter site. Website construction is a complicated task for those who don’t have that specific training, and even if you can build a website, is it worth the time it would take you to build it? Many people find it advantageous to start out with a program that will build your website for you.

Marketing Your Business
Once you have your site built and hosted, you’re in business. But you need to draw visitors to your site in order to do business. Not many visitors are going to just show up at your virtual doorstep if you aren’t advertising. To draw in the visitors, you need to market your business. The more marketing you do, the more visitors your site will have; the more visitors you get, the more potential for business you are creating. There are lots of ways to market your business - Google AdWords, article submissions, solo ad emailing, backlinks, etc. - but many of these require lots of time. So again, you need to decide whether to do all this yourself or to outsource some or all of these marketing efforts.

Blogging about Your Business
A key component of marketing an internet business can be blogging. Blogs are just series of usually short articles to your base of viewers. You are imparting information to the viewers, and the viewers can leave comments to you and other viewers. To maintain a blog, you have to write your blog message at whatever frequency seems appropriate to you - every day, 2 or 3 times a week, once a week, etc. Again you’re facing a decision whether to create and post your own blogs, or to outsource this task to someone else.

Email Management for Your Viewer Database
As your business picks up, you’ll need to keep in touch with your viewer base that has signed up on your website. This is one of the most important pieces of your business - to keep your visitors interested in either signing up to work with one or more of the affiliates you are promoting, or to sell them some other related item. Do you have time to set this up and do all the hands-on work yourself, or should you outsource this part of your business?

When determining whether to do various aspects of your business yourself or to outsource them, consider what your skill set is and what your budget allows. Your time should be spent doing what you do best; and those tasks that you aren’t so adept at, or those that are too time consuming, are good candidates for outsourcing.
