Be Prepared To Have A Go

Many of us born just before, during, or soon after the Second World War have invariably been significantly influenced by parents intent upon security above all else. The mantra of obtaining qualifications and locking ourselves into a safe job, such as teaching or nursing or banking all seemed to be directed towards respectability and some standing in the community, but rarely with any entrepreneurial bent. Life was usually a hand to mouth existence with few luxuries and little opportunity to explore life outside our limited environment because of the lack of funds provided by such occupations.

Our education systems appear to have supported this line of thinking. We were all expected to toe the line and conform to policy designed to turn out students who were capable of supplying answers to exam questions but with limited understanding. Often times, if questions were rephrased, then the ability to provide answers came to a sudden halt. Learning by rote had some benefits, but in general it produced students who lacked flair.

Of more recent times, children have been encouraged to “think outside the square”. They have become far more adventurous and believe that “anything is possible”. The thought of failing is not a barrier to at least attempting the task. Failure may direct them towards a different and often times better approach, with success an eventual reward.

The willingness to “have a go” appears to have brought with it the establishment of a significant class of people who not only attempt more but expect more from life. The adventurous spirit has its rewards and the resultant improvement in lifestyle and income makes for a happier individual.

Don’t get hemmed in by family and friends, or society in general, too willing to put borders around us. Have a go. Try something new.
