One of the biggest challenges for a mother today is the decision of whether to work outside the home or stay at home while raising their children. In our society today, more and more women are opting to work from home while they manage home and business. These women have to create a delicate balance of work and home; making everyone happy while inhabiting and working in the same space. Work from home moms can manage home and business effectively when following some basic suggestions that are listed here.
Make rules for the members of your household, even the cat and dog. Certain rules will need to be discussed in order for the work at home mom to manage home and business efficiently. One of the main problems that moms have when working from home is continual interruptions because the family simply think she should be available to them every hour of the day. Since she is right in the other room it is easy for them to feel this way. Set the rules of no interruptions during your work hours, unless it is absolutely necessary. It really shouldn’t need to be said, but losing a marble into the heating vent doesn’t qualify as being absolutely necessary. Let them know that when you are working, they will just need to find ways to solve their own lost marble issues or wait until you are taking a break.
Set your office hours and do not deviate from them. After you have made the rules for your family regarding your home and business, you will have to come up with suitable working hours. It has been said by work at home moms that it is easier to work with your kid’s schedules and not against them. If they are school aged children, your business hours can be the ones that they are in school. Younger children will need a bit more of your time, so you can make your office hours during their naptime or when your spouse gets home to help entertain them while you work.
Design a box full of things to pass the time for your little ones. You can call it a busy box or activity box that includes play things that will occupy their time while you are working on your business. While you are working, make sure that they have things to do, in order for you to have peace while doing business. Set a timer, if necessary, to alert your children of your break time. This will be their way of knowing when that they can talk to you or ask you to fix them a sandwich or play a game with them. If your three year old is getting simply too impatient for your break time and none of the above tactics work, take a kid break for a few minutes to renew their happiness. You will be amazed at how much better that they feel after you have spent just a couple of minutes reading to them or playing a game.
Section off and establish your own work space and do not allow others to invade it. Work at home moms sometimes find it difficult to retain the level of privacy that is required to concentrate unless they are completely away from distractions. Whether the home office space is in an entirely different room or even in the corner of the kitchen, it needs to be designated as mom’s sole work space for her business to be successful.
