Affiliate marketers are turning to press releases to get the word out on their business and finding a well-written press release can be far more effective than a well-placed ad.

The beauty of the press releases is that they come with a certain amount of legitimacy; they are seen as news rather than as a marketing ploy. Even though that is exactly what most press releases are, they are more of a soft sell that lend credence to your message.

The days of believing that only major corporations can issue press releases are long over. Small business owners and yes, affiliate marketers, are filling up newswire services with announcement of business launches and new deals.

Because more and more people are discovering the power of the press release, it makes it more important than ever to have a well-written release that does more than market your product. Because, ideally, you don’t want to send your press release onto the web and not have it read by anyone but you. The point is to reach prospective customers or recruits.

To do that, you need a press release that is more than a long advertisement. You need a press release that is newsworthy.

You can either write your own press release or hire someone to do it for you. Either way you should know what a good press release looks like and what it should contain.

—It’s all in the lead. The headline and first paragraph of your press release should be all a person needs to read to get the gist of what your press release is about. It should contain all the basics, the who, what, why, where and when of your story.

—It should be newsworthy. If you are launching a new business, it’s a good idea to come up with a neat angle, because there are a lot of people out there launching businesses just like yours. If you’re a former carpenter who has found success with internet marketing, put that front and center. If you’re a homemaker, or a veteran or any other interesting fact that sets you apart from the pack, that’s what you should play up.

—It should be informative and to the point. The press release should focus on one aspect of your business and should not be overly long and filled with long quotes of meaningless information. Don’t fill it with industry jargon that only those on the inside know. Keep it simple and keep it to point.

—It shouldn’t have a single exclamation point. Save the excitement for your website and leave the facts to your press release. An exclamation point can destroy your business credibility faster than you can upload your release.

—It should be true. Make certain not to over-hype whatever you are writing about. A press release is not the place to claim everyone can make cash instantly by joining your business. Be straightforward and honest and your press release will no doubt be far more effective.

—Use spelling and grammar check. If you decide to go ahead and write your own release, make certain everything is spelled correctly and your grammar is spot-on. If it’s not, it might not see the light of day and your entire effort will have been wasted.
