Home Employment - Is it the Right Choice For You?

Home employment is a tantalizing option for many people. Working from a home based office lets you control your own schedule, combine work with looking after the kids and gives you the freedom of being your own boss. But home employment is not the right choice for everyone. How do you know if home employment is not your best career move? Here are some red flags that might alert you to the fact that home work and you are not the best mix.

The first red flag is that you like to work in groups. Do your best ideas come from brainstorming sessions in board meetings and do you thrive off of bouncing ideas off of your co-workers? Home employment is very solitary work. The vast majority of the work you do will be independent, and even if you collaborate with people, you are unlikely to have that ongoing, daily interaction with them that would have in an office setting. If you find long days of working alone depressing instead of enticing, home based work is probably not going to end up being your dream job.

Another red flag is that you are not much of a self starter. Sure, you might be tired of having a boss breathing down your neck, but knowing that your boss is hovering probably helps to keep you on track and working hard. If you need someone over your shoulder, holding you accountable for your work, then a home based job might be hard for you. You have to make yourself get up, get dressed, and go to work, and you have to avoid the temptation to do the cleaning, chat on the phone or just veg out and watch TV. If you think you will struggle with that, then you might be best working outside of the home.

One red flag that a lot of people tend to overlook when it comes to home based work is that they don’t actually have any place to get the job done. You may think you can set up your office at the kitchen table, but you need a real, dedicated workspace to remain productive. Not only are there too many distractions elsewhere, but you will struggle to draw a line between your free time and work time. When you don’t have an office space, your home life and your work life constantly bleed together, this decreases productivity and increases stress.

The final red flag has to do with your finances. Are you being realistic about your earning potential with home employment? You can make a lot of money working from home, but it can take a long time to get to the point at which you are supporting yourself. You need to make sure that you can support yourself in that transition phase and that you have a backup plan in place to make it work.

Home employment can be rewarding and successful. All you need to do is make sure you are realistic about what it means before jumping in and make sure that the business opportunity is the right move for you.
